Saturday is National Take A Hike Day, so bundle up and hit one of these Metro Detroit trails and find some peace and quiet before planning the holiday week ahead. Thanksgiving is next week so in between shopping for a turkey and pumpkin pie, plan a fun family adventure at one of these weekend events!

WILD LIGHTS AT THE DETROIT ZOO

The Detroit Zoo will light up the night again this holiday season with Wild Lights, a spectacular light display.  For 24 nights, more than five million LED lights will illuminate trees, buildings and more than 230 animal sculptures throughout the front half of the Zoo.  Experience the magic of the Detroit Zoo in winter as you take in the lights and the sights and enjoy holiday entertainment and special activities for guests of all ages. Children younger than 2 are admitted free.

DETROIT TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY

The tree lighting ceremony will feature a Michigan-grown, 60-foot Norwegian Spruce wrapped in more than 19,000 multi-colored lights and ornaments. The event begins at 5 p.m. and is free to the public.

CHRISTMAS PARADE

The Parade route begins at Northline near the Police/Court Building and ends at Eureka Avenue. The parade begins at 10 am and usually runs approximately one hour. Wyandotte’s Christmas Parade often draws participation from local marching troupes, pipe and drum and marching bands, schools and organizations from throughout Michigan and Canada. The parade ends with Santa Claus!

 

ENGLISH-ARABIC STORYTIME

@ Arab American National Museum, Dearborn

Children ages 2-6 and their parents are invited to attend storytime in the Library at AANM. A storyteller will read picture books in both English and Arabic, teaching a few Arabic words and phrases. Following the story, there will be time for free play, crafts or games in the Library.

This is the perfect event for dinosaur experts and amateurs alike!

Michigan is home to thousands of miles of trails, including the Iron Belle Trail. Join us at the OAC to learn about our staff’s favorite hikes and gain inspiration for your next venture into the forest. There will be a self-guided scavenger hunt to take across the street to Milliken State Park to put your newly learned skills to the test.

 

THANKSGIVING HERITAGE AT THE HISTORIC CENTER

Get ready to relive the first Thanksgiving through foods, voyages and Native American heritage. Our historian will take you through the voyage of the Pilgrims to America and the encounters of their first winter. There will be hands-on crafts to take home too.
