The Train Show is intended to introduce the general public to model railroading in an entertaining, lively and family-friendly atmosphere. The hobby of model railroading has a unique ability to bring the family together in activities that teach many skills. Model railroad skills span from carpentry to artistry, from electrical engineering to historical research. Model railroading is truly the World’s Greatest Hobby.

Lights, Camera, Action! February Flicks is coming back to Beacon Park Detroit featuring some great films and programming every Saturday in February for the whole family to enjoy. MAPLE’S SWEET STORY

Saturday, February 23 & Sunday, February 24

@ Kensington Metropark, Milford

Take a guided walk through the farm’s sugar bush. Learn how to pick the right tree, then watch how maple trees are tapped and sap is collected. Stop by the French and Native camp to hear and see how these techniques have changed through the years. Then visit the sugar shack to see and smell the sap being boiled down into maple sugar. Taste a sample of maple syrup at the end of the tour. 

 

THE GRATITUDE STEEL BAND

Family Farm Chores allows you and your family a chance to assist staff as they feed and care for our farm animals. We encourage you to pet, take pictures and ask questions along the way. Maple Madness – Learn about tapping a maple tree and then taste samples of treat you can make a home using maple syrup both sweet and savory, yum! The nature center will be open for warmth but cooking will take place around the campfire.

PEWABIC POTTERY TOUR AND TILE WORKSHOP

During this tour and workshop, you will have the opportunity to see the pottery at work, visiting its museum and learning about its evolution into a contemporary 21st-century studio. You will then head to the Education Studio, where you’ll learn the basics of tile making. They will provide the clay and materials for you, and in 4-6 weeks, you will be able to pick up your completed project.

 

DREAM CATCHER WORKSHOP

Celebrate Detroit’s African American History at our annual family friendly event. This year’s educational and fun activities will focus on neighborhood sports in the Detroit. We will talk with groups that play lacrosse, golf, hockey and other neighborhood games. Share stories about what you played in your neighborhood growing up! Admission is free.

 

KIDS COOKING: CHICKEN POT PIE, TOSSED SALAD AND CHERRY TURNOVERS

Chef Pam will teach students how to prepare homemade foods, including main dishes, sides, salads and desserts at home. Students will begin with food safety and handling, how to use knives and various tools in the kitchen, clean-up and how to read and prepare a recipe. Students should be between 8-12 years old and bring an apron to wear in class. Materials fee now included in class cost!

 

STORYTIME AT THE MUSEUM

MAPLE MADNESS! TAP THAT TREE

@ Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, Rochester Hills

Maple sugaring season is one of our favorite times of year at Dinosaur Hill. This program will focus on the history of maple sugaring and will also include a tapping demonstration. Take a tour of our historic “little house” and find out how early settlers and Native Americans used maple syrup and sugar. We’ll have some authentic treats to taste as well.
