Create a 3D sculpture inspired by the artist Louise Nevelson who was known to make work using everyday objects and materials she found on the street. We will explore the UMMA exhibition, Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s, which features a large-scale work by Nevelson, as well as other well known abstract expressionists, followed by a hands-on workshop with local artists Susan Clinthorne and Nora Venturelli.

Meanwhile, Collections Curator Cameron Wood will be livening things up with sessions covering ancient myths and legends from around the world relating to lunar eclipses. Then, blast off for a Virtual Reality simulation of space travel. There will be table-top activities for young and old alike, where visitors can make space slime, assemble their own 2019 moon phase chart, and more! The Science Shop will be offering 10% off all space-related merchandise, with members receiving an additional 10% off. Canton Township will honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special tribute. A punch and cookie reception will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a program at 6:30 p.m. This year’s keynote address will be presented by Martin Philbert, Ph.D., Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, at the University of Michigan.
