We will explore the meaning that is implied when images of living forms, objects, and other things that could not have met in the same place and time, meet in your work. UMMA docents will lead a tour of the exhibition, followed by a hands-on workshop with local artist Adrian Deva. Designed for families with children of ages six and above. Bring your favorite doll and join us for an American Girl Spa Day! You and your doll can get your hair done, you can pick your favorite nail color, make friendship bracelets, and dance the day away! This is a drop off event, kids only.

Chef Pam will teach students how to prepare homemade foods, including main dishes, sides, salads and desserts at home. Students will begin with food safety and handling, how to use knives and various tools in the kitchen, clean-up and how to read and prepare a recipe. Students should be between 8-12 years old and bring an apron to wear in class. Materials fee now included in class cost!

Joe Rogers from Wildlife Recovery Association has been a fan favorite all over Michigan. He brings live owls and hawks up close so you can get a birds eye view of these magnificent raptors. Register early because seating is limited.

 

WINTER HIKE

Saturday, February 16 

@ Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center, Shelby

Dress warm and bring your hiking poles and binoculars to join us in a brisk nature walk to learn about how animals in Michigan survive the frosty weather. We will search for signs and track and be able to identify scat that our cold-tolerant friends leave behind. Of course, inside the center we will have winter animal crafts and activities for those of us who are not so cold tolerate. Warm cider and hot chocolate will be provided (please bring your own snacks if desired).

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, join Detroit multimedia artist Donald Calloway as he displays some of his varied work and helps visitors create art of their own using found objects and a heart motif. Calloway’s colorful works are filled with emotion, expression and mystery.

Help us find where the Nature Center snowman went! We’ll follow tracks and uncover clues to help us discover its whereabouts and what happened to it. After our time outside, enjoy some hot cocoa and a chance to build a bird-friendly snowman friend. Ages 6 and up.

 

WINTER WILDLIFE WALK

Learn how Michigan’s wildlife survive the harsh winter months. Hike through the trails as we search for clues and signs of which animals are active and how they find food, water, shelter and stay warm.  Ages 7 and up.

Night Hikes on the Farm is a series of bi-monthly events that offer educational and recreational opportunities for visitors to venture the farm in the nighttime and explore fascinating natural science topics. The hikes will take place the last Friday of every other month. These events are open to the public and will particularly appeal to scout groups, families, and anyone with a thirst for knowledge and adventure. CAMPFIRE – MAPLES MADNESS: CAMPFIRE SUGAR

Maple Madness – Learn about tapping a maple tree and then taste samples of treat you can make a home using maple syrup both sweet and savory, yum! The nature center will be open for warmth but cooking will take place around the campfire.

 

PEWABIC POTTERY TOUR AND TILE WORKSHOP

Pewabic was founded in 1903 by innovator Mary Chase Perry Stratton. In the early twentieth century, her experiments with glazes changed the face of contemporary ceramics. During this tour and workshop, you will have the opportunity to see the pottery at work, visiting its museum and learning about its evolution into a contemporary 21st-century studio. You will then head to the Education Studio, where you’ll learn the basics of tile making. They will provide the clay and materials for you, and in 4-6 weeks, you will be able to pick up your completed project.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY DAY

@ Detroit Historical Museum

Celebrate Detroit’s African American History at our annual family friendly event. This year’s educational and fun activities will focus on neighborhood sports in the Detroit. We will talk with groups that play lacrosse, golf, hockey and other neighborhood games. Share stories about what you played in your neighborhood growing up! 

 

MAPLE’S SWEET STORY

Saturday, February 23 & Sunday, February 24

@ Kensington Metropark, Milford

Take a guided walk through the farm’s sugar bush. Learn how to pick the right tree, then watch how maple trees are tapped and sap is collected. Stop by the French and Native camp to hear and see how these techniques have changed through the years. Then visit the sugar shack to see and smell the sap being boiled down into maple sugar. Taste a sample of maple syrup at the end of the tour. Real maple sugar products and pancakes will be available for purchase.. Tours begin every ½ hour, last approximately one hour and are entirely outdoors.

THE GRATITUDE STEEL BAND

Bring the family to enjoy the rhythms of the Gratitude Steel Band as they bring their high-energy island style and positivity to a vast array of musical styles from Calypso to Jazz and Afro-Cuban to Motown. With interactive songs and a chance to try out the steel pan drums yourself, this performance is sure to engage all members of the family!

 

PEG + CAT LIVE!

Based on the Emmy-winning PBS Kids show PEG + CAT (produced by The Fred Rogers Company and 9 Story Entertainment), this totally awesome musical features wild comedy, countless favorite songs from the show, and Peg’s super coolest pal Ramone! When Peg’s Mom asks Peg and Cat to mail some really important letters they come face to face with a really big dog. Really Big Problem! To solve it, they’ll need math—bar graphs, size comparison, position words, fair sharing, and a whole lot of counting. They’ll also need to count on each other, and the audience too, for their problem to be solved.

Maple sugaring season is one of our favorite times of year at Dinosaur Hill. This program will focus on the history of maple sugaring and will also include a tapping demonstration. Take a tour of our historic “little house” and find out how early settlers and Native Americans used maple syrup and sugar. We’ll have some authentic treats to taste as well.

 

FOUR FEET DOWN THE TRAIL- MY SPECIAL FEET
