Meet Lisa

My name is Lisa Rivera, my husband is Roberto and our kids are Violet (9) and Arlo (5). We are an unschooling family and we run Brightmoor Flower Farm, a cut flower farm on the west side of Detroit. At the farm we offer year-round, Spring and Summer bouquet subscriptions, U-Picks, and Workshops, every fall we host a Homeschool U-Pick and also offer full-service floral design for weddings and events. We love incorporating homesteading, animal husbandry, and as much outdoor time as possible.

Best Park/Playground:  Eliza Howell Park (Detroit)

We love Eliza Howell park – it has acres of wild space to explore and they just added a beautiful new natural stickwork sculpture.

Best Family-Friendly Annual Event: Sidewalk Festival (Detroit)

It’s completely inspiring to see so many beautiful people coming together to perform or showcase their art and talents in such a unique and raw way for the communities.

Your Mom Must-Have: My PACKPACK

An adorable little fanny pack that keeps all the things within reach! Now my kids each wear one too- mostly to carry their own snacks! Best part is that it’s ethically made in Pittsburgh by my friend.

Best Spring Destination or Event: Trillium in Bloom season

Hands down the trillium in bloom in mid-May. Livonia’s Rotary Park is covered in them and they are just so special.

“Pat Yourself on the Back” Accomplishment: Work-Life Balance

I knew I always wanted to homeschool my kids because as a kid I was a VERY social and creative person but didn’t care much for the academic side of school, and I went through most of it feeling like a failure or like there was something wrong with me. As soon as I became a mother I knew I needed to be home with her. I was not going to accept the narrative of either being a stay at home/unschooling mom OR a working mom: I wanted both, needed to be both, so I started building my flower farm business 6-7 years ago as my kids were very young and now that they’re older and my business is thriving, so is my relationship with them. Don’t let your own mindset or other people tell you what you can and can’t do.
