Meet Krista

My name is Krista McClure. I’m the Inspired Director and founder behind Detroit Parent Collective; Detroit’s first permanent coworking space with onsite child care and a cooperative preschool. I’m also privileged to be the mama to undoubtedly the most amazing little humans that exist in this world (in my mind), Carnieche (13) and Giselle (7). They’ve formed me to be a compassionate, empathetic, nurturing, and devoted human.

I often reference my oldest as being the light who showed me the way because, at age eighteen, my future was dim. Oftentimes, I’m asked how did I land where I am today at thirty-two years young with no degree. Especially seeing that I work in a predominantly male-dominated space (IE; Economic Development) and my response: “There are no words to describe what it means to be a minority developer and business owner, only actions to describe what it took to get here: Perseverance and Grit. I’ve inherited these character-traits through my own personal challenges and obstacles that stood before me. As a high-school dropout once facing homelessness while also pregnant, I had no choice other than to be an adaptive thinker/learner, effective communicator, thoughtful partner (or voice) in a place/space in addition to being creative (a hustler).”

Best Park/Playground:  Douglas Evans Nature Preserve (Beverly Hills)

My family and I thoroughly enjoy visiting Douglas Evans Nature Preserve as it is closest to our home. In addition to that, we love Quarton Lake Park and Belle Isle. All three of these parks offer the children (and parents) the ability to explore and hike freely.

Best Family-Friendly Annual Event: Shimmer on the River (Detroit)

We absolutely love Shimmer on the River in Downtown Detroit. We purchase tickets every year to attend this fundraiser evening event. It’s quaint (despite being an extrovert, I very much dislike crowds), plus offers unlimited access to rides, food, music, and– yes mamas, cocktails. To support Detroit Riverfront Conservancy which offers great parks, splash pads, and activities along the Detroit Riverfront is pretty special.

Your Mom Must-Have: An Early Start to My Day

In order for a fairly smooth day, it’s critical for me that I rise early. Typically I’m up at 5:45 A.M. This gives me time to jog, meditate (or breathe) and plan for the day. It’s my “me time”.

Best Spring Destination or Event: Visiting Local Parks

Spring? We have Spring in Michigan? Just kidding… I would say spending time on the trails at either Palmer Park or Belle Isle Park in addition to visiting Brightmoor Flower Farm, tucked away on the west side of Detroit. In short, we like to be outdoors and with COVID, it’s the best remedy.

“Pat Yourself on the Back” Accomplishment: Loving Myself for Who I Am!

My biggest personal accomplishment that I’ve accepted from my earlier (and foundational) years as a middle schooler was; accepting my flaws or imperfections and loving myself. We can try to be someone else, even imagine what it’s like to be in their shoes, and yet despite it all, they too have flaws. No matter how perfect we imagined them to be. Love thy’ self, always.
