Looking for inspiration + ideas for things to do with kids in Metro Detroit? Tried and true suggestions that real moms actually do? Here they are! Hungry Howie’s appreciates Moms and joins LittleGuide Detroit in spotlighting a local Mom each week in the #MomLife series. To take one thing off her plate and give her more time for fun, Hungry Howie’s is giving each week’s featured Mom a free pizza dinner for her and her family to enjoy. Thank you Hungry Howie’s for being the Official Pizza of Moms.

Meet Allison

Hi! I’m Allison. 🙂 I have two boys – Gavin, almost 3, and Spencer, 9 months. I’m married to Chris, and we live in Shelby Township. I’m a stay-at-home mom and truly love being at home with my kids. I am working on growing my Instagram (@becomingtheirmom) into a community that normalizes “just” (although we know it’s not “just” – it’s a LOT!) being a SAHM. I’m trying to grow awareness around the fact that if it’s what you truly want, it is ENOUGH to “just” stay home with your kids! There is so much pressure nowadays to do more, and I’m just over it. 🙂

I suffered from pretty bad postpartum anxiety after my first son was born and would love to write a book chronicling that journey one day. In my “free time” (haha – what even is that?) I like to exercise (any other Peloton moms out there?! I’m @allisonmjohn), read, write, watch crap TV (RHONY forever), cook, organize my house over and over, and SLEEP.I love living in Michigan and am excited to hopefully get traveling our beautiful state again now that Covid seems a bit more under control and my kids are getting bigger. 🙂

Favorite Ways To Spend Family Time:

  • Walking the kids to a park/having a picnic
  • Going out to brunch (easier than dinner!)
  • Having a chill day at home with no plans

Favorite Places To Go:

Favorite Bedtime Stories:

Favorite Family Friendly Restaurants:

Best Park/Playground: River Bends Park (Shelby Twp.)

We love the playground at River Bends! It’s great for small children and has lots of inclusive options for those with special needs. I also love how adjacent it is to the walking trails – so fun for my toddler to explore. We actually live close enough to ride our bikes here, which is really fun!

Best Family-Friendly Annual Event: Blake’s Lavender Festival (Armada)

I’m a big proponent of choosing events/activities that are fun for the adults, too, and this is awesome for moms and dads – not just the kids. 🙂 Kids love the tractor ride to pick lavender, playing on the structures, doing the DIY activities, and of course eating donuts, while adults can shop amazing vendors and enjoy some hard cider.

Your Mom Must-Have: Sturdy + Stylish Diaper Bag

Wine? Just kidding. 🙂 I would actually say a good, sturdy, stylish diaper bag that can hold all your stuff and that you actually enjoy taking everywhere with you. I’ve had the Honest Company diaper bag for the last almost 3 years and it has held up amazing. I love how it looks, and it has compartments for anything and everything. I make sure to always unload it and restock it when we get home each day so it’s ready to go for our next outing. It makes SUCH a difference to know that you are prepared for everything your little ones may need and that you can cart everything around comfortably. I’ve heard great things about the Fawn Design bags, too.

Best FALL Destination or Event: Apple picking at Westview Orchards (Washington)

This is such a well-run place with so many fun things for the whole family to do. There is a huge apple orchard to walk through, and the tractor ride there is so exciting for kids. We always take our son there for his birthday each year, and it has been so fun to see how differently he interacts with the experience year after year.

“Pat Yourself on the Back” Accomplishment:Breastfeeding My Little Ones

I breastfed my first son until he was 20 months old and am still currently breastfeeding my 9-month-old. I really do love nursing my kids and am so grateful that my body has allowed me to do it for such long periods of time.
