You don’t have to travel far to find the one of the best museums in America, the Michigan Science Center was just voted the #3 Science Museum in the county by USA Today readers. 

If you haven’t been to the Michigan Science Center in Midtown Detroit, plan a playdate or family day to check out over 220+ interactive exhibits, live demonstrations and special themed activities. A few popular exhibits include:

  • Smithsonian Spark!Lab – Through hands-on activities, interactions with facilitators, and even conversations with inventors from the community, children and families engage in the process of invention.
  • STEM Playground – Stop by the STEM Playground to learn about the forces acting on an airplane, how to position a sail to be able to travel into the wind, how engineers design everything around us, and the importance of planning and foundation when building.
  • Centennial Lab – Discover a variety of science topics with themed activities in chemistry, physics, engineering, life science and technology.
  • Nano Gallery – Nano is an interactive exhibition that engages family audiences in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.
  • Earth.Wind.Weather – Earth. Wind. Weather. sponsored by General Motors, features 10 new interactive exhibits that put guests in control of some of nature’s most powerful and impressive phenomena. Create avalanches and geysers, explore Jupiter’s otherworldly atmosphere, command ocean waves, step into a powerful tornado, transform desert landscapes, and more with this immersive new experience!
  • Space Gallery – Marvel at the wonders of the universe as you explore the history of human space travel, learn about rocket technology, tour the galaxy, travel to the sun and more.

Guests can also experience ‘Above and Beyond’ now thru September 8th. The 6,000 square foot exhibition offers an out-of-this-world experience and showcase everything from the first powered flights to the newest innovations on Earth and in space. After entering an immersive wraparound theater, visitors can venture into five galleries comprising dozens of interactive displays. Exhibit-goers can ride to the edge of space in a simulated space elevator or test their own supersonic fighter jet design in a virtual high-speed flying competition. A group flying experience with motion-sensing image capture helps visitors sense what it’s like to fly like a bird in a flock, while exploring the forces of flight.

The Michigan Science Center is open Tuesdays thru Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Admission is $18 for kids ages 3 and up. An annual membership is $99 for a family and a great way to have a ‘free’ go-to activity all year long. MiSci is also a member of the Museums for All program and families can receive $3 admission for up to 4 people when you show your SNAP/EBT card.
