Kids: Posey, 5
I’m a Social Entrepreneur, Artist, and Designer. I run a startup called BLOCK x BLOCK, where we sell customized “blocks” (boxes) filled with mystery commissioned works by local artists, that also gives back to Detroit neighborhoods; It’s a really unique gift-giving opportunity! I also run I Am Young America, a blog and digital marketing company that highlights and supports America’s youngest entrepreneurs. As a single mom and serial entrepreneur, I’m always trying to find cool ways to blend my work with family life, which is why next up for me is the Boho Bar, a D.I.Y. bar, makerspace, and boutique for the whole family. My daughter is creative just like me, so we enjoy making art together and visiting cultural and arts attractions in Detroit and beyond.
BOHO BAR // MIDTOWN
The Boho Bar is launching in Midtown next Spring, but we’re currently doing pop-up events at the location until launch. My daughter loves to tag along with me to Boho because she’s a maker and got it honestly. On Dec 2nd, we’ll have free holiday themed crafts for kids and friends can preview the space and menu of handmade projects to tackle.
SOCRA TEA // MIDTOWN
Posey loves to try a sample of tea from SOCRA TEA. This is a super kid friendly teashop where I’ve had plenty of work meetings with my daughter in tow! There’s an area with a sofa that’s perfect for kids that features a mini library of books for children to read. They also have some of the best teas and healthy smoothies in the city! Meg, the owner, has two small children of her own, and I’ll often see them when I visit. Just yesterday I ran into two families that I know at SOCRA TEA.
DETROIT PARENT COLLECTIVE / BAGLEY
Detroit Parent Collective is a new co-working and childcare space, and while I’m not a member, my daughter and I love attending their events! Last year they had a wonderful Easter event on the campus of Marygrove College that included a garden tour, easter egg hunt, petting zoo, movement classes, food, and more! We had a blast!
GOOD CAKES AND BAKES // AVENUE OF FASHION
Good Cakes And Bakes is another super kid-friendly place to Posey and I love to visit together. I’m vegan and I love that they have the most delicious vegan cupcakes and treats, which are super hard to find! I love that I can treat myself and my daughter guilt-free. GCB also throws the best harvest party in Northwest Detroit, complete with DJ, costume contest, free food, and more!
