It’s finally April, but don’t let those showers keep you from going out and having fun! We know…kids are expensive, so we’ve put together the top FREE events to enjoy as a family this month!

 

THE BEACH DETROIT

Wednesday – Sunday in April

@ Downtown Detroit

The Beach Detroit reimagines the familiar natural and cultural elements of a day at the beach to create an unexpected and memorable experience for people of all ages. Visitors ascend a ramp before entering an all-white enclosure, where the floor descends towards the highlight of the experience – an ocean of recyclable, antimicrobial plastic balls.

You and your child can join our Naturalist on a nature discovery and exercise walk. The trail may be unpaved so all-terrain strollers are recommended. A baby backpack/carrier is suggested for infants. Depending on the weather and temperature we will have indoor activities and shorter outdoor activities.

The Youth Services Department’s “do-it-yourself crafts” are a wonderful opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind craft. On craft days, drop in during any of the listed times to find all of the supplies and directions needed to create a simple, yet memorable craft. All children age three and up are welcome to attend. An adult who can help with scissors and glue must accompany young children to these free events.

 

ARAB AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM’S BOOK + PRINT FEST

Join the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, Sierra Club Great Lakes, Great Communities, MI Rain Barrel and Green Living Science for a morning full of environmental activities! The day will kick off a rain barrel workshop with the Sierra Club where participants can learn about the benefits of rain barrels and how to make their own rain barrel. Following the workshop Detroit residents are invited to to learn about the new curbside recycling program in the city and how to practice the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

 

FAMILY ART STUDIO: PAINTING WITH PAPER

@ University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor

Join us for a close up look at the collage art of contemporary artist, Mark Bradford. Using paper, interesting materials, and surprising techniques we will create abstract landscapes or cityscapes. The workshop begins with a tour of UMMA’s gallery of Modern and Contemporary art, followed by a hands-on workshop with local artist, and UMMA community Docent, Susan Clinthorne.
