Support Your Local Firefighters for National Fire Prevention Week

National Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10th and in most years, fire stations open their doors for tours and activities to help families learn about fire safety. Things are different this year and since our firefighters can’t do something for us, we want to do something for them!
We’re asking LittleGuide Detroit families to pick up a sweet treat and make a special delivery to their local Fire Department to thank them for their service and ask for a fire prevention tip or two.
This is an activity that I personally do with my family for MLK Day and it is a highlight of my year. Firefighters live at the fire station when they are on duty and always happy to have visitors. They might let you sit on the truck, run the siren for you or even let you play with the hose!
A few LittleGuide families have already made a visit this month and everyone had a great time! Plan a visit for your family (you don’t need to call in advance but you can) and if you want to share a picture with us tag @littleguidedetroit, we love to see our heroes in red!
If you can’t make a visit, make time to talk to your kids about fire safety. Let them help you test your smoke detectors to make sure the batteries are good and come up with a safety plan about how to leave your house in an emergency and where to meet. The Fire Prevention Week website has helpful tips and talking points for parents and videos and interactive games for kids.
