The Detroit Zoo is sharing plans for a new KidZone that’s expected to open in 2024 and we can not wait to check it out.
The Detroit Zoo is already a favorite of families in metro Detroit. From the Polk Penguin Conservation Center to the Red Panda tree top walk and Australian Outback walk-thru adventure, new additions in recent years have transformed the Detroit Zoo experience and they’re not stopping. The next great undertaking by the Zoo is a $20 million KidZone designed to help kids experience the wonder of wildlife and learn about the natural world.
Groundbreaking is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2023 for a grand opening in 2024. The KidZone plans call for three adjoining areas on seven acres near the center of the Zoo.
Play Zone
- A spectacular aerial adventure will elevate kids up to 16 feet off the ground and onto a thrilling trail among the trees.
- A large treehouse play structure will include a netted tunnel, multiple roofed towers and several climbing experiences and slides.
- Interactive exhibits will provide kids with opportunities to dig, play and explore tunnels as though they are animals living underground.
- The tots area will provide the youngest visitors with opportunities to crawl and explore among larger-than-life elements that bring the natural world into focus.
- A sheltered seating area will host educational programs, birthday parties and other private events.
- A new water feature will provide opportunities for splashing in the summer sun and “soaking up” all that KidZone has to off er.
Habitat Zone
- An expanded and reimagined barnyard will allow the DZS to house and care for additional animals and provide exciting new experiences, including a contact area where guests can share space with domestic sheep and goats.
- A brand-new prairie dog habitat will give these charismatic creatures more room to roam, and a large underground viewing tunnel for guests will off er incredible views of the colony.
- The anteater habitat and indoor holding area will be expanded and improved – ensuring the highest standard of welfare for these fascinating animals. A new private experience area will offer participants the opportunity to feed the anteaters and learn about them from a staff member who provides their daily care.
- The enhancement of an existing habitat will accommodate the return of bush dogs to the Detroit Zoo.
Gathering Zone
Caregivers and kids will relax, take a break and recharge. Spanning an acre, this section will include shady resting spots, concession stands, phonecharging stations and other amenities. The space’s central location will make it a perfect place for children and caregivers to connect and plan their time at the Zoo
