March is National Reading Month and a great time to celebrate the joys of reading and discover new books (and cherished old ones). Whether you read something new at bedtime or plan a weekend activity, here are 7 fun things to do to celebrate National Reading Month with your kids of all ages!

Read a book by Dr. Seuss

Did you know National Reading Month is in March because March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’ birthday? The legendary children’s author changed the way we read and showed us how to embrace our differences and be silly. He wrote over 60 books, including our favorite, Oh The Places You’ll Go.

Visit Your Local Library or Check Out A New One

Libraries love Reading Month and so there are always fun activities and events planned to celebrate. Plan a trip to your local library, check out one of the coolest libraries in metro Detroit or attend a special event.

Explore The World & Metro Detroit

Reading is incredible – it has the ability to transport you from your chair to an exciting adventure. Open a map, close your eyes and let your finger land where it wants. Read about the country/continent you choose. Did you land in the ocean? Good! There are plenty of fish in the sea (and fish books at the library).

Did you know that your library card can get you free and discounted admission to museums and activities across Michigan? Check out the Michigan Activity Pass program and plan an adventure.

Read a book about your favorite movie or tv show

Little Golden Books has a book for everything. My little loves Zootopia and Finding Dory, we read the Golden book and talk about the differences between what happened in the movie and what happens in the book.

Enjoy a FREE movie night at a local library. Dearborn Heights is showing LUCA on March 23rd and the Livonia Public Library is showing it on March 26th.

Try something new

No matter how old you are there is always something to learn, and reading is a great way to start! My 1 year old loves to do yoga poses from his Yoga Bug board book. Find a book about dance, arts & crafts, gardening, or cooking and try it at home!

Read books in a new way and check out a story book trail.

Read YOUR favorite book + Discover New Ones

Introduce your little to the book you loved to read when you were their age. Ask relatives to share their favorite books too! It’s a great way for family to bond and have fun.

Discover new favorites and sign up for a book subscription box, there are options for all ages and prices ranges.

Share the love of reading

Let your little exchange books with a friend. Or consider donating a book to a little library, homeless shelter or children’s hospital.
