National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th to October 15th and the perfect opportunity to celebrate Hispanic culture with your kids. From museum trips and take-out to movie nights and family dinners, here are ways to have mas divertido.

Visit The DIA

The Detroit Industry mural by Diego Rivera is an iconic work of art and defining piece of the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection. Bring your kids to see the renown Meixcan artist interpretation of the Motor City.

The annual Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos exhibit opens on September 25th and celebrates the popular Mexican holiday, the Day of the Dead. Take your kids to see the exhibit and follow up the experience with free online learning lessons, available on the DIA website.

Admission to the DIA is always FREE for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Take A Trip To Mexicantown

Supporting small business is always important but it has extra value these days. Skip the kitchen and get take-out from one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. And be sure to treat your kids (and yourself) to something sweet from La Michoacana or the Mexicantown Bakery.

Watch Ballet Folklórico

You can’t see the Ballet Folklórico De Detroit live right now but you can catch their performances on Facebook. The local dance troupe dedicate their time, passion and talent to showcase beautiful traditional dances from Mexico. Check out the video from their 2020 outdoor performance for Detroit Out Loud. Keep cuddled on the couch and watch more traditional Mexican dance on A Celebration of The Music From Coco, available on Disney+.

Expand Your Home Library

The DIA’s drop-in art studio is offering art-making project ideas available online. Try Stabiles, Mosaics or a Neighborhood Collage and learn about the original works of art it’s inspired by.

Taco Tuesday

Celebrate Hispanic culture at home. Tell Alexa to put on a Latin Hits playlist and get cooking in the kitchen with your kids. Local mom Sarah shares delicious authentic Mexican recipes on Instagram @growingupsarita.
