5 Places To Celebrate Black History Month In Metro Detroit

February is Black History Month. Teach your littles about the accomplishments and contributions of black Americans at these museums and special events.

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS

Admire the works of African and African American artists at the DIA, participate in family-friendly games and activities in the General Motors Center and watch artists perform live! Admission to the DIA is FREE to residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

CHARLES H WRIGHT MUSEUM

Explore the journey of black Americans from the Motherland in Africa to the American colonies and the streets of Detroit. Join the Family Activity Series on February 8th & 22nd to learn about black cultural heritage through rhythm with bucket drum improvisation!

MOTOWN MUSEUM

Barry Gordy and the Motown Record label broke barriers and paved the way for international icons like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to reach the pinnacle of music success. See where it all started on W. Grand Boulevard at Hitsville U.S.A.

DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Take a walk through old Detroit and the Underground Railroad to experience the journey of former slaves searching for freedom and see what they accomplished in areas of industry, sports and the arts after they arrived.
