The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that demonstrates love and respect for deceased family members with a two-day celebration. Introduce your family to the Mexican with these activities at home and in Detroit.

Visit The DIA

The annual Ofrendas: Celebrating el Día de Muertos exhibit celebrates the popular Mexican holiday, the Day of the Dead. Take your kids to see the exhibit (open through November 6th) and follow up the experience with free drop-in Sugar Skulls Workshop on Saturday, October 28 and Sunday, October 29. Admission to the DIA is always FREE for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.


Celebrate At Valade Park

Celebrate Día de los Muertos on the Detroit Riverfront’s Valade Park Saturday, October 28th. Join in the Mexican tradition and celebrate the Day of the Dead with at Valade Park during the FREE family-friendly event. Enjoy food, live music, a performance by @folkloricodetroit, children’s activities and more. View the community ofrenda honoring and remembering all those lost. Participate by leaving a name or message for a loved one.
 
Children activities begin at 11am and the final performance by Ballet Folklórico is at 1pm. Free, easily accessible parking is available and public restrooms.

Take A Trip To Mexicantown

Experience Mexican culture and enjoy a delicious dinner in southwest Detroit. Be sure to treat your kids (and yourself) to something sweet from La Michoacana or the Mexicantown Bakery.

You can also make Pan de Muerto at home.


Family Movie Night

Cuddle up on the couch and keep tissue nearby for Disney’s Coco. After the movie, watch A Celebration of The Music From Coco, available on Disney+ to see traditional Mexican dancers live on stage. The littlest kids will enjoy the new Super Monsters Dia De Los Monsters on Netflix.
