3 Things to Do In Detroit For National Reading Month
The grass is a little greener in March and we’re all ready to get out the house. So plan a day trip to Detroit and celebrate National Reading Month at these great book stops.
Visit the Detroit Public Library
The Detroit Public Library Main Branch on Woodward in Midtown is a stunning Italian Renaissance-style building that is nearly 100 years old. It’s fun to explore and the large children’s department has beautiful mosaics created by a local artist and inspired by children artwork. Stop in for a visit or check out their calendar for a special event.
Find a Little Library
You’ll find hundred of little libraries across Detroit. The mini houses are found everywhere from landmark locations to private residences. The grassroots program is a book exchange where visitors can leave a book and take one with them. By making books easy to access, kids and adults in Detroit will be able to read more! Check out the Little Library locator to find a place to visit. A few of our favorites:
- Corktown: Detroit Institute of Bagels is one of our favorite places to start our day in the city and the outdoor space is perfect for littles on warm days.
- Woodbridge: Dr. Who fans won’t want to miss the TARDIS (Totally Awesome Reading Dispensary In Society) in this popular Detroit neighborhood. Get lunch at Pi-Sci or Woodbridge Pub while you’re there.
- Grandmont Rosedale: Play on the playground at North Rosedale Park and pick up a new book at Pages Bookshop.
- Belle Isle: Enjoy a day on the Jewel of Detroit and visit the Belle Isle Nature Zoo.
Buy a book at John King
Located in a former glove factory, John King Used and Rare Book Store is a labyrinth your littles will love getting lost in. The close corridors isn’t great for the very young, but older kids will have fun searching through the old titles. Free, on-site parking makes it an easy place to visit. You can also pick up books at other local books sellers – Pages Bookshop and Vault of Midnight.
