Get out the house and head downtown this winter. From family ‘field trips’ to outdoor fun, there’s lots to do in Detroit!

Light Up Beacon Park

If you haven’t yet experience the photo-ready interactive gingerbread house, giant hot chocolate, and other sweet-themed light-up delights, you won’t want to miss it and the final day of the display is January 10th. Light Up Beacon Park is free and open to the public.

Ice Skate @ The Rink

Strap on some skates (they’re available to rent) and hit the ice at The Rink at Campus Martius in the heart of downtown Detroit.

Spend A Day At The Museum

Avoid cabin fever and get out the house and in from the cold at a museum. Learn something new at the Michigan Science Center, explore the great works of art and create your own at the Detroit Institute of Arts (admission is FREE for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties), travel back in time thru the city’s past at the Detroit Historical Museum and take a trip to Belle Isle to visit the Great Lakes Museum.

Nature Walk On Belle Isle

Bundle up and explore nature at Belle Isle State Park. After your walk, let the kids burn off more energy at the playground – you’ll find two of our favorites.

Winter @ Valade Park

Valade Park on the Detroit Riverfront offers year round fun for families and during weekends in January there will be special events and activities including sled rental, ice carving, live music and more.

Celebrate MLK Day

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a family field trip to the Wright Museum of African American History.

Get Creative With The African Bead Museum

The African Bead Museum is not open to the public but the building’s exterior is a site to see! Take a visit for photos and order beads online to make African inspired jewelry at home.

Go Play at Ganbaru

If the kids are climbing on the walls, take them to Ganbaru Ninja Gym for ninja warrior-styled obstacles, rock climbing and where you can practice parkour.

Test Out The Sledding Hills

Make the most of snowy days and hit the best sledding hills in the city.

  • Milliken State Park: 1900 Atwater Street, Detroit, 48207
  • Robert C. Valade Park: 2670 Atwater St, Detroit, MI 48207
  • Balduck Park: 5271 Canyon Street, Detroit, 48236

Plan Taco Tuesday In Southwest

Switch up your dinner routine and enjoy a family meal out at an authentic Mexican restaurant. There are plenty to chose from but Mexican Village, Armando’s, and Los Galanes are a few of our favorite places to eat (and they have free parking lots). After dinner stop by La Gloria Bakery on Bagley for a sweet treat.

BONUS: YMCA Members will want to stop by the Boll Family Y downtown to got for a swim and splash at the indoor pool.
