10 Great Picture Books for Kids

Summer Reading starts on June 1st and libraries across metro Detroit will host special events and giveaways all summer long. If you’re looking for new books that you’ll enjoy as much as your little – here are my (and my toddler’s) favorite children’s books.
Xander’s Panda Party by Linda Sue Park
Why we love it: Lucas loves the zoo animals and I love the use of bigger words (i.e. consternation).
John, Paul, George & Ben by Lane Smith
Why we love it: Lucas loves the creative/silly drawings and I love that it teaches him about Revolutionary leaders.
Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss
Why we love it: Who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss?
Night Night Groot by Brendan Deneen
Why we love it: Lucas loves pointing out all the superheroes and I love seeing all the superheroes too!
Why we love it: Lucas loves books about big brothers and I love books that teach him that engineering and problem solving are fun.
The Green Mother Goose by David Davis
Why we love it: Like all kids Lucas loves nursery rhymes. I love the new spin on old favorites that will hopefully inspire Lucas to think about the planet.
I’ll Wait Mr. Panda by Steve Antony
Why we love it: Lucas loves reading this book to himself and I love that it’s easy for him to memorize.
The Wall in the Middle of the Book by Jon Agee
Why we love it: Lucas loves the animals and drama of this book. I love the message that walls don’t necessarily protect you from danger and can keep you from something great.
Monsters Love Colors by Mike Austin
Why we love it: Lucas loves the monsters, I love that it teaches him about primary colors.
Why we love it: Lucas loves the suspense of what the monster will do next. I love his excitement at every page.
We also love all Sandra Boyton and Mercer Mayer!
