Earth Day is Thursday, April 22nd and we put together a list of local events that will help us get our kids outside and involved with fun activities that give thanks to Mother Earth and all that she has to offer.

 

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION @ WEST BLOOMFIELD RECREATION CENTER
TUESDAY, APRIL 20
Cost: FREE

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by spending time outside enjoying nature. Come explore the Outdoor Natural Play Area. Celebrate Mother Earth with many activities which, include: Recycled craft, Live animal interactions, Vendor activities and displays and Guided nature hikes at 4:30 and 5:30 pm (must be registered in timeslot with hike).

 

EARTH DAY OUTDOOR  STORYTIME @ LIVONIA CIVIC CENTER
THURSDAY, APRIL 22
Cost: FREE
Danielle Carlomusto, founder of Gro-town, will lead families in songs and stories while sharing the joys of gardening. Livonia Civic Center Library on the grassy area behind the parking lot. Please bring a blanket and/or chairs, maintain social distancing and wear a mask.

 

EARTH DAY UPCYCLE CRAFTING @ HUDSON MILLS ACTIVITY CENTER

THURSDAY, APRIL 22
Cost: $6
Enjoy Earth Day by taking items we’d normally throw away and turn them into something useful! For this upcycling craft we’ll take packaging tubes of different sizes and create a colorful wall hanging organizer. The finished organizer will be about eleven inches long by seven inches tall and hang on your wall. You can decide to make it smaller or larger to fit a space in your home. Make it your own by designing it and choosing paint colors you like. There’s no need to be an artist or even an expert crafter as we will supply everything you need and go step-by-step with you to complete this upcycle craft.

 

EARTH DAY OPEN HOUSE @ FOR-MAR NATURE PRESERVE

Join us at our many education stations geared towards making you a planet protector! Earth Day Stations include: petting zoo, recycled crafts, garden time and more.

 

EARTH.WIND. WEATHER GRAND OPENING @ MICHIGAN SCIENCE CENTER
SATURDAY, APRIL 20
Cost: $14-18
This immersive new exhibit puts you at the center of some of nature’s most strange and unpredictable phenomena. Create avalanches and geysers, explore Jupiter’s otherworldly surface, command ocean waves, step into a powerful natural vortex, transform desert landscapes, and more with this interactive new experience! To celebrate the opening (and Earth Day!), MiSci will have a variety of activities planned that highlight the link between science, technology, and society. These activities and experiences were designed by NASA to feature ties to their current cutting-edge research.

 

EARTH DAY CLEAN-UP @ LAKE ST. CLAIR NATURE CENTER
SATURDAY, APRIL 24
Cost: FREE
Are you a student or student group looking to earn some community service hours or do some good work in your community? Then volunteer with us for our Earth Day Clean-up specifically for students. Help us keep our park beautiful and safe for people and wildlife. Volunteers will be assigned to different areas of the parks at check-in. All necessary tools, gloves and bags will be provided. Volunteers will receive free entry into the park on clean-up day. Face coverings and social distancing are required.

 

DEQUINDRE CUT CLEANUP @ DETROIT RIVERFRONT
SATURDAY, APRIL 24
Cost: FREE
Volunteers are asked to register at the link below and meet for check-in at the Dequindre Cut entrances at Woodbridge, Gratiot and Wilkins Street for registration and directions. Please dress for the occasion. Masks and social distancing will be required. We will have trash bags, gloves, masks and hand sanitzer onsite.
